Cosmic Coincidence or Divine Intent?

Everything has gone wrong in the worst way possible and I don't know why. It was a special day. OUR special day. We were to take our vows, our souls forever bound. Then, something happened. The sky lit up like never before. It was so bright I could only turn away. What followed was a loud sound that assaulted me. It brought me to my knees as I covered my ears. As I looked to the ground, blood began to drip at a somewhat concerning rate. With my eyes closed, I thought, this must be it, the end times spoken of throughout history. I opened my eyes and before me was what could only be described as a gateway of some kind and for the briefest of moments, I swear I heard a voice. It called to me. It wanted me to go through. It promised salvation.
Without thinking, I stood up, ignoring the pain and ran forward as fast as my feet could carry me. As I went through, everything assaulting my senses stopped. My hands dropped from my ears, blood smeared across my palms. I took stock of my condition, bleeding from my eyes, ears and nose, but intact. I used a nearby lake to wash my face and as I stared into the water, a thought raced to the forefront of my mind, Astrid, she's still back there! I turned back to locate the gateway, but it was nowhere to be found. I was swiftly overcome with an overwhelming sense of guilt. I left her behind! How could I do that!? I didn't even think when I dashed toward the gate. Pure survival instinct drove me forward. She must be terrified, if she even still lives. I wasn't there for her. Please, forgive me...
