Skills not drawing MP from fonts while tapped in

GreatCatatonic spent his MP down to 1 doing alchemy, then realized he could tap into the font to not spend his own. Once tapped in, he was disallowed from doing alchemy because he didn't have enough MP. He was also disallowed from Praying for Magic for the same reason.

A tick happened and I was able to pray for MP and then do alchemy, properly drawing from the font, so it seems to be the game is just checking your current MP levels for skills before checking to see if you're tapped in to a font.
