Plague rats not giving despawn messages

I have fought two Plague Rats today, both of them disappeared without any sign.
They weren't on the map anymore, no message about them dying or despawning. Might be possible that they ran inside buildings, but is that something they do?
Somewhat annoying to fight them, you just get Minor Poisoned for the trouble of trying to kill them.
