Note to any other dev investigating this bug: I couldn't reproduce it on either devserver or live.
On Devserver, I tried joining The Deadly Sins as this character.
On live, I tried joining A Hell Gate as this character (who I obviously have since renamed and re-themed, but remains logged as founder of A Hell Gate in perpetuity).
In both cases, the game made my character Leader as intended.
