Skills: Let Persistent Spellcraft prevent enchant decay on death

Post by Zanahoria78 »

The archmage Council has been tinkering with Wonderworking recently, which lets Wizards grant enchantments to weapons/armor by crafting them from scratch. The skill has a few caveats (only 3 layers, the enchants are random, crafting is heavy on the AP) but imo the biggest obstacle is that there is nothing you can do to avoid losing those enchants eventually. So I'd like to propose something: what if Persistent Spellcraft prevented enchant decay on death, like Seal Magic does?

You might argue this treads on the Conduits' (and Advo/DO's) toes, but a) Wizards are paragons of sorcery and the most efficient magic users, able to benefit more from combat spells, buffs and potions, b) Persistent Spellcraft already has to do with preserving magic that improves one's person, and c) Persistent Spellcraft is a 60CP child skill of a 60CP skill, so paying 120CP for enchantment protection sounds reasonable to me. If this is still OP, another option would be to make Persistent 90CP, but I'm not sure that's necessary.

Part of the appeal of Wizard is delving into what others have accomplished and replicating it. It totally makes sense that they'd be able to prevent enchantment decay through some method. Persistent Spellcraft seems like a fitting place for that. It's thematically appropriate, already takes a significant cp investment to get to, and while making buffs last longer is nice it's more of a QoL enhancement rather than a power boosting effect. Adding in enchantments not decaying doesn't directly boost their power either.

If folding the enchantment protection into Persistent Spellcraft isn't warranted, another option might be to have that as a Council option or folded into the Wonderworking policy. The problem with that is that you really want your enchantments protected all the time and that might cause Council policy to stagnate on one option rather than vary amongst several desired ones.

Low impact improvement to a pretty unappealing option. Seems like a good idea to me.

edit: changed my mind. I think this is a bit overpowered as it would allow wizards to collect a full set of soak gear like other enchanters. I'd prefer this was tied to wondercraft itself than a particular wizard skill, which would give it as an option as the council dictates, but wouldn't be something that is permanently available.

Looking at Klapacius' point I agree that wizards probably shouldn't have access to the 0 maintenance full enchanted clothing suite. What about making it weapons and armour only to synergise with wonderworking?

Counterpoint, there's nothing stopping wizards from having a full suite of soak gear now, just like anyone else. It's just upkeep. You'd still have to source those enchants. It's also more expensive than the other classes that get access to protected enchants.

I'd also like to point out that there are 38 Wizards currently. Zero have picked up Persistent Spellcraft.

Edit.

Wizard is currently tied for 3rd most popular class with Rev behind ES and Conduit. Just for perspective on numbers

It's definitely bad and could use a boost, that much I absolutely agree with. But I think fully stopping enchantment decay is something that shouldn't be given to non enchanters (and I don't even think it's good for the game for enchanters to have it)

Personally, I think that this would be quite fitting.

I wish it increased the duration of glyphs too, but considering only 3 wizards have glyph mastery it would prob still be an unpopular skill. I'd buy it though.
