Weapons: Lightest Improvised Weapons Not Light?

Post by Repinuj »

Make the Cane and Fishing Pole improvised weapons Light. As in, add +10% ToHit. They're lighter than any of the Light improvised weapons, and already have the correct damage amount. You couldn't even say they're unwieldy as justification for them not being Light.

Maybe the Bullwhip, too.

Maybe change the Frying Pan from Light to Regular, on account of it being unwieldy. Dropping the +10% ToHit and adding a point of damage.

Just common sense changes.

"Light" weapons means something that can be thrown. The +10% to hit is just attached to light weapons, much like how all heavy weapons get -20% to hit. I'd argue that, despite a fishing pole being less weight than something like a frying pan, it isn't something that you could throw at somebody to do any meaningful amount of damage. It wouldn't make sense to classify it as a "light" weapon and then make it unavailable to be thrown like every other light weapon.

I'm also not seeing why a fishing pole would have an inherent bonus to hit. Whacking somebody with the end of a fishing pole isn't exactly an easy thing to do. It's certainly easier to smack someone with a cane, crowbar, or fireaxe, but I don't think that being somewhat more aerodynamic is justification to be getting a +5% or +10% to hit. I'd say that the fishing pole - along with a lot of "suboptimal" weapons like the shovel, baseball, or frying pan, are there more for roleplay purposes and having fun options rather than being the most optimal weapon choices.

I'd be curious if anybody really wanted to make a thrown weapon fisherman character and feels disappointed that the fishing pole doesn't have a thrown weapon option outside an Eternal Soldier skill.

I actually disagree in that I think it's pretty easy to hit people with fishing rods, to the point where being accidentally hit with a fishing rod is quite common. If you can do it accidentally, it must be easy right?

I can easily bump people in the head when I'm carrying boxes and they're not paying attention, but I wouldn't say "large cardboard box" is something that should have an increased to-hit rate because of that. The fishing rod is a large object and when you're swinging it around, it's easy to accidentally hit somebody when they're all sitting nearby and not really watching what you're doing with it.

That's a bit different from trying to hit someone with a long floppy stick (and actually hurt them) when they're actively avoiding it or trying to hurt you back.
