This does not make sense story-wise. The item is removed from inventory because it is "worse than destroyed", in other words it is damaged so much it is effectively just scrap. I can imagine a mechanics that automatically drops a "junk metal / tattered cloth / pile of wood splinters /...

Using up a random item would probably be the most "fair" selection criteria, but it could introduce yet another type of "RNG hates me" grumblings :D

But which item would actually be used when player clicks the use/eat/drink/etc button? The newest item? The oldest? A random item from a stack? Something else?

This may feel like an unimportant detail but it is still a decision to be made before such feature is implemented...
